There is no universal MLB gate policy. The difference between allowed and rejected can be one pocket, one inch, a frozen bottle, or a special-event override.
How to use this
Treat every card as a current example, not a league-wide rule
Start with the current official page for the park, then check the email, ticket, or event page for that exact date. Concerts, postseason games, giveaways, and other special events can use a stricter rule than a normal regular-season game.
Fan experiences are useful for finding confusing rules, but they do not override the written policy. Every summary below links to the official team source used for this review.
Size is only the first check
Material, shape, pocket count, and event type can matter as much as the outside dimensions. Compare the exact bag you plan to carry with the current written rule.
Clear-bag rule

What the written rule says
Clear bags may be up to 12 × 6 × 12 inches. A non-clear clutch or fanny pack may be no larger than 5 × 7 inches; medical and diaper bags are separate exceptions.
The easy miss
A normal non-clear purse can fail even when it would fit under a seat. The park lists paid lockers outside three entrances.
Before you go
Measure the bag and check whether it is clear. Camera cases also count as prohibited non-clear bags.
One approved bag

What the written rule says
For the 2026 season, each guest may bring one approved clear bag up to 12 × 6 × 12 inches, a one-gallon freezer bag, or a 5 × 7-inch-or-smaller clutch or fanny pack.
The easy miss
Camera bags are not allowed even though personal cameras may be. Medical-device and diaper-bag exceptions use designated search lanes.

Put every permitted item into the single approved bag before reaching the gate.
Clear backpacks still fail

What the written rule says
Backpacks, including clear backpacks, are prohibited. Other permitted bag types must be smaller than 16 × 16 × 8 inches.
The easy miss
Clear material does not rescue the wrong bag shape. Wrigley also does not offer large-bag or luggage storage.
Before you go
Use a permitted purse, drawstring bag, fanny pack, lunch bag, briefcase, or soft cooler within the size limit.
Single-pocket means single-pocket

Permitted bags must be soft-sided, single-pocket, and no larger than 16 × 16 × 8 inches.
The easy miss
Backpacks and other multi-pocket bags, including multi-pocket purses, are prohibited even when they meet the outer measurements.
Before you go
Check both dimensions and pocket count. Do not rely on size alone.
The small-print traps
Water capacity, frozen contents, sliced fruit, lens length, and bottle material are the details most likely to turn a generally allowed item into a gate problem.
Food is allowed, with conditions

What the written rule says
Food for individual consumption is permitted. Apples and oranges must be sliced, sealed plastic water may be up to one liter, and an empty non-glass reusable water bottle may be up to 24 ounces.
The easy miss
The food policy is generous, but fruit preparation, bottle material, seal, and size still matter at screening.
Before you go
Slice large fruit, keep disposable water factory-sealed, and empty the reusable bottle before entry.
Twenty-ounce water limit

What the written rule says
Guests may bring one factory-sealed plastic water bottle of 20 ounces or less. The bottle may not be frozen.
The easy miss
A sealed bottle can still fail because it is too large or frozen. Backpacks are generally prohibited, including clear backpacks with obscured inner pockets.
Before you go
Use a room-temperature or chilled 20-ounce-or-smaller sealed bottle and a permitted bag no larger than 16 × 16 × 8 inches.
Six-inch camera-lens limit
San Diego, CA
What the written rule says
Non-professional personal cameras are permitted when the lens is no longer than six inches and the camera does not use extra detachable lenses.
The easy miss
A baseball-game camera setup may not carry over to a concert or other special event. Petco says those events can use different policies.
Before you go

No backpacks, even under the limit

What the written rule says
Bags smaller than 16 × 16 × 8 inches are permitted, but backpacks are not. Sealed plastic bottles, soft-sided juice containers, and empty plastic refillable bottles are listed as permitted.
The easy miss
A correctly sized backpack is still the wrong bag type, and aluminum or glass bottles are listed as prohibited.
Before you go
Use a non-backpack bag within the limit and bring water only in an allowed plastic format.
The reusable gate rule
Use the official ballpark policy as the baseline. Before leaving, open the event email or ticket details for any date-specific entrance, bag, camera, giveaway, or weather restriction.
